Mitchell's Bradford Wool Fat Soap is a natural, lanolin-based soap that is soft and gentle on skin, leaving it feeling soft and refreshed with a pleasant scent. Perfect for sensitive skin, this soap offers the hydrating and protective powers of wool fat for a luxurious experience.

The origins of Mitchell’s Wool Fat Soap go back to the cellar of a chemist shop in Bradford in the early 1900’s.  The soap was made in the shop, from locally sourced ingredients and sold to the good folk of Bradford and West Yorkshire, good old soap for Yorkshire folk.

First produced in the the 1930's by Bradford chemist Fred Mitchell who realised the natural lanolin content of wool kept local sheep shearers and wool sorters hand's exceptionally soft.

The soap became more popular and was eventually of such volume that it had to be made off site (still in the local area), and then the deliveries began to go further afield, now sold in the four corners of the globe.

Mitchell’s has remained a small family run business since, moving to our current location in the early 90’s.

Lanolin is a biproduct from scouring the wool, obtained from the refinement of the grease removed from the fleece.  The fleece is sheared as part of the healthy management of livestock and the Lanolin used in Mitchell's products are sourced from a local company, and have used the same supplier for some 40 years, using Hydrous and Anhydrous variants, depending on whether the end product is a solid bar or liquid product.  Mitchell's try and source all our products ethically, certainly cruelty free, and sustainably, including the managed sourcing of sustainable palm oil via a RSPO supplier.

Although no medical claims are made for it, this very gentle soap is particularly soothing to sensitive skins and has often been recommended by members of the medical profession to help alleviate certain skin complaints.

Lanolin is a pale yellow natural oil found in Sheep's wool that acts as a natural water repellent and conditions the wool. It also has fantastic anti-fungal and anti bacterial properties that protects the sheep's skin from infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Why do you use British wool instead of stocking merino?

At Woollen Wytch, we’re proud to support British farmers by using 100% British-grown wool.

This not only reduces the carbon footprint of our yarn but also celebrates the incredible variety and quality of wool produced right here in the UK.

While merino is popular, it’s often sourced from South America or Australia, which comes with significant environmental costs.

By choosing British wool, we’re championing sustainability, local agriculture, and heritage breeds. 🌍🐑

How is hand-dyed yarn packaged for shipping?

At Woollen Wytch, we prioritize sustainability in our packaging.

Your hand-dyed yarn is carefully wrapped to protect it during transit, using eco-friendly materials like recyclable paper and compostable mailers.

We avoid using plastic whenever possible, so your yarn arrives beautifully presented and planet-friendly! 🌍✨

Why does my skein of hand-dyed yarn look different from the photos online?

Each skein of hand-dyed yarn is a unique work of art, dyed in small batches that can result in slight variations.

Lighting and screen settings may also affect how colours appear.

These subtle differences are part of the charm and individuality of hand dyed yarns.

Will the colours in hand-dyed yarn bleed or fade?

Hand-dyed yarns are carefully dyed using professional-grade acid dyes and set with citric acid to lock in the colours.

While minimal bleeding can sometimes occur during the first wash, proper care—such as washing in cool water with a gentle detergent—will keep your yarn vibrant for years to come.
